FAQs
Why should I choose Med-Care Transportation over another local company?
Med-Care Transportation was founded in 2009 because the founders couldn’t find reliable medical transportation for a loved one. Our Company was founded, literally, with family as a central ethic. Since that very first trip, we’ve kept loyal to our mission: We empathize and understand the tough decisions placed on families when a loved one becomes ill so we strive to find the best solution for all your transportation needs. Every single patient is somebody’s son, daughter, mother, father, brother, or sister. We treat each patient, each caller, and each coworker as if they are our family. You shouldn’t expect any less. We are also a minority-owned AND female-owned Company.
How do I schedule medical transportation?
It’s simple! Just call us at 410-375-6915 and speak with one of our knowledgeable, highly-trained Customer Service Representatives. Whether you wish to schedule your transportation for days, weeks, or months into the future or you need same-day service, call Med-Care Transportation and we can figure it out!
How do I pay for my transportation? How do I pay my bill?
Depending upon certain factors, you may qualify for reduced rates or even transportation at no cost to you. When you schedule transportation, your Customer Service Representative will discuss payment arrangements with you. Have you received a bill from Med-Care Transportation? Do you need somebody to explain the charges to you? Do you wish to pay your bill over the telephone? Please call us at 410-375-6915 and we’ll walk you through exactly what you need. NEW! We now accept online payments!
Can I pay for my transportation with a credit card?
Certainly! We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. We also accept checks and in rare instances, cash.
Do you accept my insurance?
The short answer is: probably. We do NOT accept Kaiser Permanente as they are contracted with another vendor. If you have Kaiser, you’ll have to call them at 800-777-7902 to discuss your options. But for the large majority of insurers, we accept. Some insurers have varying requirements as to what services are covered but most cover ambulance transportation. The only entity which will pay for a wheelchair van transport is Maryland Medical Assistance. If you have Medical Assistance, transportation must be arranged through the jurisdictional MA office. If you have additional questions, please click HERE to submit a question or you can call us at 410-375-6915.
I’m only going ten minutes away. Why do you want to pick me up so early?
One of the most frustrating aspects of the transportation industry is trying to arrive at the scheduled pick-up time and getting stuck in traffic. For most trips, our Customer Service Representatives will ask you what time you have to be at your destination. We strive to pick you up one hour before that appointment time since we cannot predict traffic accidents, road closures, or any other reason a road may be impassable. We want to pick you up early because we know your appointment is very important and we don’t want to be the reason you have to reschedule.
I’m interested in scheduling a standby detail or some other type of special event. How do I do that?
Call us at 410-375-6915 and our Customer Service Representatives will forward your information to the correct person to explain our policies & procedures when it comes to special events.
My loved one has to be transported outside of Maryland. Can you do that?
Sure! We are licensed in Maryland so we can take patients to any state.
I have insurance. Why did I receive a bill?
Most insurance providers, including Medicare, pay only a portion of your stretcher transportation bill. Many people have a supplemental insurance plan which also pays a certain percentage. Oftentimes, after the insurance companies have paid their portions, there may still be a remaining balance. This is NOT always the case, and most of the time the remaining balance is minimal. As always, if you have any questions or need us to explain in greater detail, call us at 410-375-6915 so we can make certain you know exactly what your insurance has paid and why you have a remaining balance.
I don’t need an ambulance: I need a wheelchair van. Does insurance pay for that?
Commercial insurances and Medicare NEVER pay for a wheelchair van, but Maryland Medical Assistance (Medicaid) will. They have certain requirements which must be met, and as with any bureaucratic entity, it normally takes a day or two to receive authorization. We recommend you call the jurisdictional Medical Assistance office or Baltimore City’s Health Department to begin the process.
My ambulance arrived 15 minutes late. Why?
We strive to be ON TIME for every single transport; however, in the real world we know this is impossible. We schedule your pick-up time early because there is no way to predict some factors such as traffic accidents, police activity, thunderstorms, trees or power lines down, broken water mains, and even delays at facilities for other scheduled or ASAP patients. We also take patients into the Emergency Rooms and unfortunately, there are times we get stuck in the ER for 1, 2, or even 3 hours or longer. And because we work primarily in the Baltimore metropolitan area, we get stuck in traffic during the morning & afternoon rush hours. Again, we strive to be ON TIME for every single transport, but sometimes we just cannot be. We’re at the mercy of the roadways. But rest assured, you will receive a telephone call with a status update if we think we may be late for your pick-up.
My loved one is being discharged from the hospital /a rehab facility and finally coming home. S/He cannot walk but lives on the second floor. How can I get my loved one home safely?
All of our wheelchair van drivers are licensed with the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) but since they are the only one-person units, our Mobility team cannot assist wheelchair-confined patients up steps. To get a patient up steps safely, we dispatch an ambulance to take the trip. Our ambulances are staffed with two Maryland EMTs (or one EMT and one EMR) and are also equipped with a “stair-chair.” A stair-chair is a medical appliance which is specially designed to get your loved one safely up the steps. EMTs and EMRs are trained to use the stair-chairs and they require two team members to operate. Don’t worry, our EMTs and EMRs are licensed through the State of Maryland and to receive that license, they must demonstrate that they know how to use the equipment SAFELY.
My loved one has struggled with obesity for a long time. Will you still be able to accommodate his/her transportation?
We have TWO dedicated ambulances which are specifically equipped to safely transport morbidly obese patients up to 750 pounds. These ambulances are equipped with wider stretchers for a more comfortable ride for our larger body-sized patients. Obesity is an epidemic in the United States and we recognize the special needs for these patients. Some patients will require two or even three teams to accommodate, so we do request as much notice as possible for these trips. As always, we treat all of our patients with the dignity they deserve: we treat them like family.
Another company transported my loved one recently and the vehicle broke down or shouldn’t have been on the road. Is your fleet safe?
Our fleet is very safe. Each of our vehicles receives regular maintenance, oil changes, brake inspections, tire inspections, and Maryland State Inspections. We utilize a local vehicle repair company (locally-owned!) which can handle the issue. We take fleet maintenance & safety very seriously!

How do I become an EMT?
The easiest (and most cost-effective way) is to join a local volunteer fire company. You can sign up for an upcoming EMT class through volunteer fire stations throughout the state of Maryland. Best of all, taking the course is FREE. You will receive the training required to sit for your National Registration and your State of Maryland exam. If you don’t want to commit to volunteering your time, you can enroll in a local community college and sign up for EMT-Basic courses through them. It isn’t free, but many of the community college-based programs are also taught by the same instructors who teach the free courses. For more information about these courses, visit a local community college website or click HERE to visit the website for the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS), the State agency charged with overseeing EMS in Maryland.
